Welcome to Ferrum

Ferrum is a small rural community of about 5000 people located in Franklin County, Virginia. Our service area is aproximatly 25 square miles and includes an elementary school, a small private college, a rail line, several small industries, and a new industrial park which is curently under development.

As with all the other Squads / Departments in the county, some of our personel are actually members of both the Fire Department and the Rescue Squad. Both Squad and Department are supported by Auxilary orginisations who take care of all support work such as grounds and housekeeping at the stations, fund raising, recruitment, and food service / support at major incidents. Although they never seem to get the recognition they deserve, we would be hard pressed to function without our Auxilaries.

Ferrum Rescue Squad is staffed by 20-25 members. 15 are asigned to regular duty teams and the remainder are "floaters" filling in for Day Time Calls and as manpower is needed. Our membership includes 1 EMT - Paramedic, 1 EMT - Cardiac, and 10 EMT - Basic's. The remainder of the membership is made up of Drivers and American Red Cross - Emergency Response First Aiders.

Ferrum Fire Department is comprised of approximatly 30-45 members, including Junior Memebers (any member under 21). Training and certification levels of our members include Fire Fighter Level 1 & 2, Hazardous Material Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Vehicle Extrication. Recently we were fortunate enough to have added a Satalite station to our opperation - the Henry Fire Department. Pictures of their apparatus and a profile on their membership will be forth-coming.
